Marc Notes:
Not only will this title help you explore the world's toughest environments but the reader will also find great advice on exploring their own back yard! Learn how to plan your expedition, camp in the countryside, survive in the wild and even useful information on what you can find in your garden, all from full-time and professional explorer Justin Miles.

Biographical Note:

Justin Miles is a professional adventurer who has undertaken expeditions and adventures in some of the world's most extreme environments. He uses his experiences to support charities and education projects, many of them for children. Justin turned his passion for adventure into his profession after recovering from a 1999 car accident, which resulted in brain injuries that left him having to learn to walk and talk again.

Review Quotes:
Splashy layouts with plenty of access points for reluctant readers. Every page in this compact-sized book contains four or five colorful photos and graphics -- think Boy Scout Handbook on steroids... Highly readable.--Karen Kline "Puget Sound Council for the Review of Children's and Young Adult Literature" (9/30/2017 12:00:00 AM)

Review Quotes:
(review of UK edition) There's a huge amount of information, and inspiration, contained in this rucksack-pocket-sized guide. Author and real-life explorer Justin Miles covers all the basics, including essential kit and how to pack it, and the key survival skills - lighting fires, tying knots, using a compass (there's even one attached to the cover). He also describes the challenges of real life exploring in the world's extreme climates, quoting examples from his own travels and from history. The information is clearly laid out, and the anecdotes and true life stories are fascinating. Justin comes across as exactly the kind of bloke it would be fun to trek with across the Arctic. Guaranteed to put kids in the mood for outdoor activities.--Andrea Reece "LoveReading4Kids" (2/1/2015 12:00:00 AM)

Publisher Marketing:

Ultimate Explorer Guide for Kids presents straightforward advice on what every explorer must know if they are to survive the most daunting challenges the world has to offer. The ultimate adventures are gleaned from the author's travels around the world. He packs every page with the priceless knowledge he has gained over the years.

Features include:

  • "Watch Out!" warnings and danger alerts
  • "What To Wear" checklists
  • "How To" advice (such as how to spear a fish)
  • Equipment essentials (like anti-leech socks)
  • "Did You Know" sidebars describing the animals adventurers may encounter
  • Interesting facts, such as the experiences of record-breaking explorers, like British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes who cut off the tops of his own fingers in a vise rather than endure the pain of frostbite for one more minute
  • Explorer Q+A's, where the author describes his own lifetime of exploring
  • Author Q+A's.

Ultimate Explorer Guide for Kids is no replacement for the real thing but quite possibly it will inspire would-be explorers to dream about their own adventures in the not-so-distant future.
